Welcome to the Australian Apprenticeships Access Programme

MST Workplace Solutions were recently successful in gaining the Brokerage Contract for the Australian Apprenticeships Access Programme, issued through the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

MST Workplace Solutions will be offering contracts to providers (Registered Training Providers) across Tasmania to provide training that will assist participants to enter their chosen industry armed with the confidence, skills and knowledge that the industry requires. Providers will be liaising with industry to develop courses which can include:
  • The skills and knowledge required by industry.
  • Job search training which can include resume writing, interview techniques, applications and self promotion.
  • Personal development training, which can include work ethics, communication skills and working in team environments.
  • Work placements which will assist the participant in developing the skills in "real life" situations and developing contacts and networks in their chosen industry.
  • Job search support for 13 weeks after classroom training.
  • 13 weeks on the job support when successful in obtaining a position in industry.

What is The Access Programme?

The Access Programme is an initiative of the Australian Government, Department of Education, Science and Training. The Access Programme provides job seekers who experience barriers to skilled employment, with pre-vocational training, support and assistance to obtain and maintain an Australian Apprenticeship. Alternatively, a job seeker may be supported into employment, further education or training.

What does it cost?

The Access Programme courses are free for all eligible job seekers.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for assistance under The Access Programme, participants must meet at least one criterion from each of the following three categories:

category 1 - Residency
A participant must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident of Australia, or the holder of a permanent Australian visa, or the holder of a New Zealand passport who has been resident in Australia for at least 6 months prior to commencing the programme.

category 2 - Registration
A participant must be registered with Centrelink or a Job Network Member as a job seeker with the exception of those who have been referred by a:
  • Youth Pathway programme (YPP) provider.
  • Partnership Outreach Education Model (POEM) provider.
  • Jobs Placement Employment and Training (JPET) provider.
  • Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) officer.
  • Indigenous Employment Centre (IEC) officer.
category 3 - Personal Circumstances
A participant must be at least one of the following:
  • aged 15 years or older and assessed by Centrelink or a Job Network Member as eligible for Intensive Support or have participated in the work for the Dole programme.
  • a person under 25 years of age who left school prior to the completion of Year 12 and/or is referred by a YPP or POEM provider.
  • an 'at risk' Year 12 school leaver.
  • an Indigenous Australian person.
  • an Australian born South Sea Islander.
  • a person who has been registered with Centrelink or the Job Network as unemployed for one year or more at the commencement of the programme.
  • a self-disclosed ex-offender (excluding current inmates).
  • a homeless person.
  • a person with a disability or disabilities.
  • a female seeking an Australian Apprenticeship in a non-traditional occupation.
  • a sole parent receiving Parenting Payment at the single rate (PPS).
  • a mature aged worker aged 45 years and over.
  • a person who has completed a DEST funded Language, Literacy an Numeracy training programme.
The Access Programmes:

  1. Help participants work out what they need so they are "job ready" and kept on track with their goals.
  2. Train participants in the basic skills needed for a particular industry. This training is nationally recognised and linked to a Australian Apprenticeship pathway.
  3. Include 'on the job" work experience.
  4. Support participants while they are looking for work by helping them with such things as working out the best job opportunities, writing a good CV and preparing for interviews.
  5. Provide support to keep them going if things get tough while they are looking for work.
  6. Help with settling in during the first 13 weeks of the Australian Apprenticeship or job.
